Expert answers most common HVAC and plumbing questions.

Why is my energy bill so high?

High bills often result from: poor insulation, air leaks, inefficient equipment, incorrect thermostat settings, or duct leaks (losing 20-30% of conditioned air). Port Washington’s climate makes systems work harder. An energy audit identifies savings. New high-efficiency systems can reduce costs by 20-40%.

If pipes freeze: shut off the main water valve, open faucets to relieve pressure, and call us immediately. Never use open flames. Common freeze points include pipes in unheated basements and crawl spaces.

Use a breathable cover or just plywood on top to prevent debris accumulation. Never fully wrap the unit – this traps moisture and causes rust, especially with salt air. Units are designed for weather, but coastal properties benefit from monthly fresh water rinses.

Several factors can cause this issue: dirty air filters (most common), low refrigerant levels, frozen evaporator coils, or a malfunctioning compressor. In Glen Cove’s humid climate, frozen coils are especially common. Turn off your system for 2-3 hours to let it thaw, check and replace your filter, then restart. If the problem persists, professional service is needed.

Call immediately for: no heat below 40°F, no cooling above 85°F, gas odors, major water leaks, sewage backups, no hot water, electrical burning smells, or frozen pipes. Our 24/7 service ensures rapid response in Glen Cove. Emergency service adds $75. For non-emergencies, schedule next-day service to save on fees.
